The management of Sunshine Stars Football Club of Akure has expressed deep sorrow over the death of its former coach, Mr. Lawrence Akpokona, who passed away after a brief illness.
In a statement, the Chairman of the Ondo State Football Agency (ODSFA), Mr. Divine Ogbonnaya, described the late coach as a dedicated professional whose contributions and sacrifices to the club would never be forgotten.
Mr. Ogbonnaya noted that Coach Akpokona who managed several clubs in the Nigeria domestic league played a significant role during his time with the Akure-based side, stressing that his name would remain etched in the history of Sunshine Stars FC.
He prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased’s soul and extended heartfelt condolences to his family, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF),Nigeria premier football league NPFL and stakeholders in the football community.
Lawrence Akpokona served as the coach of Sunshine Stars FC in 2003, guiding the team through a transitional period before the appointment of a substantive head coach.
