Sunshine Stars head coach, Bobola Akinfolarin, has apologized to the club’s supporters following the team’s narrow 1–0 defeat to Edel FC in their NNL league opener at the Awka City Stadium.
A deflected free kick by Ifeanyi Aniji in the 32nd minute proved the difference, handing Edel FC all three points despite what Akinfolarin described as a committed and tactically disciplined performance from his side.
Speaking after the match, the Ondo-born tactician expressed deep disappointment with the result, insisting that Sunshine Stars did not deserve to lose based on their overall display.
He took full responsibility for the setback and assured fans that identified lapses will be corrected swiftly ahead of Saturday’s first home game of the season against Gateway FC.
“We came with a clear tactical plan and the boys executed it well, but unfortunately we couldn’t convert our chances,” Akinfolarin said. “It’s painful because the goal we conceded was deflected, and on the balance of play we didn’t deserve to lose. I take full responsibility for the result, and we will immediately work on the areas that need improvement.”
He appealed to the fans to stay supportive and believe in the team’s process, promising a stronger performance in their next outing.
Sunshine Stars now shift focus to their upcoming fixture in Akure, where they hope to bounce back and secure their first win of the campaign.
