COMMUNIQUÉ ISSUED AT THE END OF THE MEETING OF THE SPORTS WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (SWAN), ONDO STATE CHAPTER, HELD IN AKURE, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2026
Members of the Sports Writers Association in Ondo State met at a meeting presided by its chairman, Segun Giwa, and deliberated on several key issues affecting the state of sports in the state and resolved as follows:
1) The Congress congratulated Ondo State Governor Dr Lucky Aiyedatiwa and the people of Ondo State over the recent celebration of the 50th-year anniversary of the creation of the state.
2) The association, however, expressed displeasure over the omission of sports icons who had represented and brought glory to the state over the past 50 years during the celebration.
3) In view of the above, the association expressed plans to organise an event to celebrate outstanding Ondo State indigenes in sports with collaboration with various sporting associations/federations.
4) SWAN urged sports stakeholders in the state to collaborate with one another to engender sports development, especially the games of football, where it has been observed and alleged that Ondo State Football Agency (ODSFA), the parent body of Sunshine Stars and Sunshine Queens, are not working in consonance with other relevant associations for success.
5) The association found it preposterous that management of ODSFA at this crucial time, without elaborate explanation to players and officials, would reduce their salaries ahead of the second stanza.
6) The Congress noted with serious concern the lack of a befitting stadium in the state to host national events, thereby making the state miss out economically.
