Nigerians Urged to Support Government in Promoting Grassroots Sports

A former national squash champion, Laurel Ojo, has called on Nigerians to support government efforts in promoting grassroots sports development across the country.

Speaking on Radio Nigeria Positive FM’s sports programme “Sports Café,” Ojo, who is also a sports journalist, emphasized that government alone cannot shoulder the full responsibility of funding sports.

She urged relevant stakeholders and private individuals to take proactive steps in engaging the youth through sporting activities.

Commenting on the ongoing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Sports Festival in Ondo state through Grassroot Movemnt for Tinubu GMT, Ojo noted that the initiative has continued to drive grassroots participation across the state.

According to the former squash national gold medalist, games such as basketball, ayo olopon, lawn tennis, and football are being featured across various zones, including Ondo, Owo, Ikare, and Akure.

While commending other committee members in the ongoing president Bola Tinubu sports festival and the director general of the competition who is also a former sports commissioner on Ondo state Mr Saka Yusuf Ogunleye,She added that sustained collaboration between government and private sector stakeholders would help discover young talents and foster unity through sports.
