The President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Sports Festival, organised by the Grassroots Movement for Tinubu (GMT), has commenced in the Akure Zone to select athletes that will represent the zone at the grand finale scheduled to hold in Akure.
The event opened with the traditional Ayo Olopon game, where Akindele Metulukuro, Abiodun Olowolafe and Femi Fagbemi emerged first, second and third, respectively, securing qualification for the grand finale.
Other sports featured in the zonal qualifiers include football, basketball, volleyball, tennis, table tennis and handball, among others, making up the 10 sporting events approved for the festival.
Comrade Samuel Adebayo, GMT Coordinator for Ward 11 in Akure South, who was present at the venue, commended the organisers, sponsor and participants for sustaining community engagement through sports.
Adebayo said the festival was promoting communal interaction and strengthening grassroots sports development in the state.
He also lauded the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who is the sponsor of the festival, and the Director-General of GMT, Saka Yusuf-Ogunleye, for providing the leadership needed to ensure the success of the competition.

The game of football will commence on Sunday at FUTA field in Akure.
